Water Loss From Storm

7/19/2022 (Permalink)

If you ask a midwestern person about storms, must will say that they sometimes happen out of no where and they love watching them roll through. Although storms can be fun to watch, it is not fun to see one cause a waterloss in your home due to the large amount of rain it is bringing. Here are some things you should and should not due if you are experiencing a water loss until help arrives.

DO:

1: Shut off the source of water if possible or contact a qualified person to stop it.

2: Turn off any circuits that lead to the wet areas to prevent fire or shock.

3: Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture and the wet floor to protect furniture.

DONT:

1: Enter rooms with standing water where electrical shock hazards may exist

2: Use a vacuum to suck up water because it could damage the vacuum or even shock you.

3: Turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet or enter rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water.

Once SERVPRO of Boone & Clinton Counties arrive, we will make sure the water source is shut off that caused the loss and then we will begin the mitigation process while answering any questions you may have.

Testing for Mold

7/1/2022 (Permalink)

Mold can be very tricky especially trying to pinpoint where it is all located and where it may have spread too. Once mold begins to grow, it will spread to anything that it can live on and sometimes it becomes visible to the eye and other times it is hidden but you can smell a musky smell and notice it that way. The only way to really dictate if it is mold is to have SERVPRO of Boone & Clinton Counties come in and do either an air quality test if the mold is not present or cut out a sample if it is visible. After running the tests, we will then know what type of mold it is and how to successfully treat it. Give us a call for a free mold inspection and we will make it "Like it never even happened".

Waiting for Help to Arrive

7/1/2022 (Permalink)

After a fire the first instinct for most people would to first make sure everyone that was in the home is okay. The next thing would be to begin going through belongings and seeing how bad the damage is, but you should NOT do that. Here are some things that you should do before help arrives that will be helpful and not harmful.

1. You should limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from spreading.

2. Coat chrome faucets, trim and appliances with petroleum jelly or oil.

3. Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpet to protect your furniture if it is not charred or has soot on it.

4. Do not clean anything or attempt to wipe anything off until professionals arrive and give the okay.

Take Precautions

7/1/2022 (Permalink)

If you have experienced an ongoing moisture problem in your home or business, it is important to be alert to these factors. If you notice any of these, call SERVPRO of Boone & Clinton Counties immediately and we will come in and take care of it.

1. The presence of visible mold.

2. Strong musty odors which may indicate mold is present.

3. Any evidence of past moisture problems that might indicate previous mold growth.

4. Excessive humidity.

Whenever there is a water loss, mold is bound to follow if not taken care of correctly. Do not take the cheap route when it comes to a water loss because mold will grow if not treated properly.

Right After Loss

7/1/2022 (Permalink)

When you notice a water loss occurring, the first thing that you should do is shut off the water line. After no more water is coming in, take good pictures just in case you have to make a claim with insurance. When finished with that, give SERVPRO of Boone & Clinton Counties a call and we will be there within an hour to begin the mitigation process. While we are on the way, it would be best if you moved any furniture that could be damaged if they sit in the water any longer. Moving furniture will also save you money. Once we arrive and get the water extracted, we will set up equipment and go from there depending on the severity.

Most Common Water Loss

7/1/2022 (Permalink)

Most people may not know this but the most common reason for a water loss is a sump pump. Sump pumps are really nice until the mess up for even a minute or two. Once they have a minor fault, it could shut off and not power back up until someone notices its off and usually when someone notices it is when there is standing water in their home and its too late. It is recommended that you do monthly checks on your pump to ensure it is running correctly and if it is not, have someone come out and look at it immediately.

Natural Hardwood Floor

7/1/2022 (Permalink)

Natural hardwood floor is different than typical flooring. Typical flooring whether it be wood or vinyl would need replaced if water had settled underneath it, but hardwood floor is different. If it is natural hardwood floor, we could set up some equipment and suck out all the moisture and over a little bit of time the buckle will go away. Natural hardwood is expensive so not having to replace it will save a lot of money. If the moisture does not come out of the natural hardwood because it had sat for too long, we will then have to cut it out and replace it which can be a pain depending on the wood finish and where it is located.

First Things To Do

4/18/2022 (Permalink)

Fires are very stressful and can make home owners feel like they do not know what to do next. Before entering the home, make sure it is safe to go in by the fire department. Here are some things that you can do before SERVPRO of Boone & Clinton Counties arrives.

  • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from spreading and additional damage from occurring.
  • Place clean towels or old linens on rugs and high traffic areas and upholstery.
  • Coat chrome faucets, trim and appliances with petroleum jelly or oil.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpet.
  • DO NOT wash any walls or painted surfaces
  • DO NOT shampoo carpet or upholstery

  • DO NOT send clothing to a dry cleaner since improper cleaning may set smoke odor and make it not able to come out.

Those are just some helpful tips that you could go by if you are at a loss for what to do next. SERVPRO will be there within an hour of two of the initial call to begin work.

Precautions to Take

4/18/2022 (Permalink)

Mold is something no one wants to mess with or encounter. Mold can be very tricky and if not treated properly or fully, it could return. Some precautions you can take is if you see something that looks like mold, smell a musty odor, or have past/present moisture problems, you need to call SERVPRO of Boone & Clinton Counties so we can properly inspect the area and run tests. If it is mold, we will then go in and treat the areas that need it as well as take precautionary measures to make sure it has not spread to other areas or has a chance to grow back. Tropical Storms

4/18/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Boone & Clinton Counties responded to Alabama after the bad hurricane hit. We sent two guys down and they worked some really long days while they were down there. Our franchise responded to 5 calls while we were down there and our crew learned so much and got a lot of experience. The folks down there were so nice and thankful for us coming down to help. Although the situation was terrible, our crew enjoyed being down there helping. Tropical storms happen every year and although they differ from severity, they are nothing to mess with and should always be taken seriously. If you live in an area that is prone to hurricanes, be sure to prepare yourself and take the correct precautions.

Why Mold Needs Treated Immediately

3/17/2022 (Permalink)

Mold is something that you never want to leave untreated or brush it off like it is nothing. Mold is a fungus that grows in the form of multicellular filaments called hyphae. It lives off of moisture and attaches to many surfaces. The way we treat mold depends on the severity, but it consists of spraying microbial on it, which kills it, then wipe it off of the surface. Another way we will combat the mold is by cutting out portions of the wall where mold is present. If you smell the odor of mold or see it, give us a call (765) 918-7871.

Rebuild

3/17/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO is known for their fire and water remediation, but we also do rebuilds as well. Whether it is just a remodel of a room or a complete rebuild of the home, SERVPRO is able to do it all. Typically after a fire loss, SERVPRO will go in and demo everything that was impacted by the fire and then it will be time to put everything back. That is when we meet with the owner of the home to go over the next steps. The next steps is to go over insurance allowance and come up with a game plan of how long rebuild will take and make a blueprint of what the owner wants the new place to look like. After that, we begin work and take care of everything.

Large Facility Losses

3/17/2022 (Permalink)

Fires are every business or homeowners worst nightmare. They can happen in an instant and everything inside the structure could be gone just like that. Large facility fires can be catastrophic to both the employees and the account that has product inside. SERVPRO may not be able to replace what was loss, but what we can do is give the owner and employees peace of mind that we will do everything in our power to get them back inside as quickly and safely as possible. We will work diligently with the facility owner, owner of the products inside the facility and the insurance company to be sure to get everything covered and back up and running.

Portable Heaters

3/8/2022 (Permalink)

One of the most commons causes of fires in the winter time comes from portable heaters. It can be from being left on over night unattended or  just being overused. Although it is nice to walk into a room nice and warm, you should not leave a heater on while you are not present just in case there is some sort of malfunction and something goes wrong. Some tips for portable heaters would be to plug them into certain outlets that have breakers attached or plug them into a durable extension cord that also has an on/off switch or breakers. Also do not plug the heater into an outlet or extension cord that is cluttered with other things plugged in.

Old Windows

3/8/2022 (Permalink)

Aging windows is not good for homes for multiple reasons. Aging windows calls for higher electric bills both in the winter and summer. A big thing about aging windows is that when a storm hits and depending on the severity, those windows could have cracks or creases that will allow water to get into your home regardless of the level of the home it is on. If the wind is strong enough and it is raining hard enough, it could potentially find its way in your home through the busted caulk, creases, cracks or anything else that could have an opening. Be sure to check windows annually to make sure they are still in good condition and does not need maintenance.

Little Water Damage

3/4/2022 (Permalink)

Water is a very necessary thing in our daily lives, but it can also cause some headaches when pipes burst or leaks occur. When people think of water damage, they think of standing water, but sometimes just a little bit of water can cause the same amount of damage. If a water loss were to occur and be stopped before a lot of water found itself on the ground, depending on where the water goes will dictate how much damage there could be. If it is on cement, it will dry in no time as long as it did not run into any walls or carpet. If it landed on carpet or found its way to carpet, that could lead to some bigger issues because of the padding underneath. In some cases, SERVPRO would have to cut out all your pad if id did not dry, and in some cases, if the pad is old enough, we would have to remove a whole room even though it did little damage. Water can be tricky, so when a loss occurs, it is best to call SERVPRO and have the professionals handle it.

Structure Damage

3/4/2022 (Permalink)

Depending on the size of the storm, they can cause catastrophic damage to not only homes but communities. Storms can do everything from uprooting trees - which could fall on houses, fences or just damage land overall, rip off siding, shingles, gutters or anything else on the exterior of the house. Either one of those things can be very expensive to repair and even taking the right precautions would not help protect from those things happening. SERVPRO of Boone & Clinton Counties does everything from the inside of the home to the outside, so if anything comes up and you need assistance, give us a call (765) 659-9600.

Candle Wax Fires

2/28/2022 (Permalink)

Candles are a hot commodity year round but even more popular in the winter time. Although candles are nice to have around the house for fragrance and look, they can also be very dangerous and could cause a lot of damage if not taken care of properly. Something people may not know is water and wax do not mix and can cause a much larger flame. If wax inside the candle were to catch on fire, do not panic and throw water on it, put the lid of the candle back on it and the fire will eventually be out out due to not having oxygen.

The number one priority for every business owner or manager is to keep their employees safe. Safety at work is also one of the biggest things employees look for and ask about before accepting a position. It is good to have different safety plans regarding different scenarios that could occur. Whether it be a fire, tornado, gunman or anything else, managers as well as hourly employees should be trained on what to do or know where to go to find the necessary information. One safety plan could be where all of the shutoffs are and how to shut them off. That safety plan could also be put together by a SERVPRO professional for a business. That plan is called an ERP and is free and complimentary to all businesses in the franchises area.

Melting Snow

2/11/2022 (Permalink)

Indiana weather can be very unpredictable when it comes to weather. It can be sunny and 60 and the next have heavy snowfall. When we get a heavy snowfall, people always shovel driveways and sidewalks, but forget about some other areas that may need to attention. Those areas would be around any gutters, exposed pipes outside or even windows that lead to basements or lower levels that could allow water in when it begins to melt. If there is a large mound of snow near a window or any possible entryway to a lower level of a home, it could lead to water damage. Another thing to check on while snow is melting is your sump pump. It could get overworked due to all the water and shut off. Most sump pump failures that we have seen is do to being overworked and shuts down for a short period of time. Take necessary precautions and if any water comes inside your home, give us a call.

After the Storm

2/11/2022 (Permalink)

Every storm is different and the severity can fluctuate throughout its duration. The best thing to do before a storm is to prepare your household with what to do in case of a power outage, tornado or anything else like that. However, there are some things that you should do after a storm to make sure your home was not damaged. After a storm, be sure to go outside and look at gutters and your roof to make sure no shingles, siding or possibly even your gutters had not been ripped off. After checking the structure of your home, be sure to go to the lowest level and make sure there is no water coming in. If there is, give SERVPRO of Boone & Clinton Counties a call and we will be there to get it taken care of. Also be sure to check your sump pump to make sure it is working correctly. Give us a call if anything arises and you need our assistance!

What to do After

9/10/2021 (Permalink)

When a big storm is in the forecast, the first thing to do is make sure you and your family have a gameplan for if and when things become severe and need to seek safety. When the storm passes, regardless of what type it is, you should check the outside of your home for any damage that the storm may have caused. Also be sure to check the lowest points of your home to make sure that no water is finding its way inside. If the weather is cold enough, check all pipes that are near the outside to make sure none of them have busted or are leaking. If there is any damage to the outside or inside of your home, contact SERVPRO of Boone & Clinton Counties and we will be there right away.

Process of a Fire Loss

8/30/2021 (Permalink)

A housefire is a homeowners worst nightmare and when they do happen, the process of getting your home back to where it was could take a while depending on the amount of damage. After the fire department leaves, SERVPRO of Boone & Clinton Counties will go in and scope out the work that will be needed done. Fire departments can add on to the damage with the amount of water they have to use to put out the fire. Typically after a fire, we have to take out drywall and ceilings to get the wet insulation. We also take out all contents that the customer wants restored and put them in our ozone after wiping them down to get the soot and fire smell out. After demoing the home, we then put drywall back up, put carpet or hardwood down and begin painting. This process could take anywhere from 4 months to a year depending on permits needed and damage that was done. During this process, SERVPRO of Boone & Clinton Counties will answer any questions that you may have and keep you informed on everything going on.

What's Next After FIre Deparment Leaves

8/13/2021 (Permalink)

One of the most commonly asked questions to us regarding fires is "What should we do when the fire department leaves before you guys get here"? The answer to that is nothing. Do not do anything in-between the time of the fire department leaves and we get there. If you attempt to clean anything whether it be knocking debris off furniture or attempting to get the soot off of clothes, furniture, electronics, it could do more damage. Without the proper equipment, soot can and will stay on anything it touches and that fire smell will stick with it. The only thing we would recommend doing is contacting your insurance to get that process going, other than that wait for SERVPRO of Boone & Clinton Counties to arrive. We can and will answer any questions you might have.

Storms are inevitable and can cause a lot of damage depending on the severity. When the forecast is calling for a thunderstorm or even heavy rain, here are some things you should do to make sure you are protected from potential damage. The first thing is to go down to the lowest point of your home and make sure there are no cracks or crevices where water could come in. Next thing you should do is check your sump pump if you have one to make sure it is working properly. We also recommend that you and your family in the home come up with a plan to get to safety if the weather gets bad enough as well as know where all of the shutoffs are just in case something were to happen. Those simple tasks can protect you and your family from any damage the storm may cause.

8/5/2021 (Permalink)

When mold forms, it can grow and infect other areas of the home fairly quickly if not treated correctly. Mold is caused by water damage or moisture that has found its way in your home and settled on either walls, ceilings or any other surface that it can attach to. Why You Cannot Let Mold Go

7/29/2021 (Permalink)

Mold is a fungus that grows in the form of multicellular filaments. If left untreated, it can continue to grow and cause major health issues with people with Asthma or any other respiratory issue. Once mold is noticed, regardless of the size, it needs to be treated immediately. The longer you leave it, the more of a chance it has to spread to more parts of your home. Once contacted about mold, SERVPRO of Boone & Clinton Counties will go in and pinpoint the source of the mold and where it started. After that, we will scope out the surrounding area to make sure that it has not spread. Once we get the area or areas narrowed down, we will then spray the mold directly and around it to both kill it and to prevent it from coming back or spreading. Do not wait, call us (765) 659-9600

Frequently Asked Questions

7/27/2021 (Permalink)

No one ever imagines anything bad happening to their home especially it catching on fire. Whenever we have a fire job, we are typically asked the same questions whether it be how long the owners will be out of a home or what will be covered and not covered. Those two are just examples of frequently asked questions. Answering those two examples can be tricky at times and every situation is different, but typically if a home catches on fire, the minimum amount of time that it could take to get the owners back in would be around four to five months. It can also take way longer than that depending on the severity. When it comes to coverage, if smoke or soot was anywhere near clothes, furniture, appliances or anything else, typically insurance companies will cover to replace or repair the damaged articles.

Busted Pipe

7/27/2021 (Permalink)

Busted pipes can be a real pain, cause a lot of damage and can be caused by a number of things. Typically busted pipes are common in the winter time due to the pipes freezing, but they can also bust due to them rusting or somehow breaking. If a pipe in your home were to bust, the first thing to do is shut off you water immediately so that the water does not keep coming into your home. The next thing is to try and figure out what caused the issue and if need be contact a plumber. Once the problem is fixed, contact us and we will get there and begin the mitigation process.

How to treat mold

7/27/2021 (Permalink)

Before you know how to treat mold, you need to know how mold grows. To grow, mold needs oxygen, a relative humidity level of atleast 60%, temperatures of 40 degrees Fahrenheit or higher and organic material to use as food to continue to grow. Once mold starts to grow, it is very important to get it taken care of immediately. To get it taken care of quickly, give us a call and we will come out and spray the infected area and all around it so that there is no chance for it to survive and find a new home on another part of the home. Our sporicidin, kills the mold or anything else that may be growing with it and prevents anymore from growing further.

Water Mitigation Process

7/27/2021 (Permalink)

Whenever SERVPRO of Boone & Clinton Counties gets a water call, we load up our van with dehumidifiers, fans and tools that may be needed to take off baseboards and cut carpet and or drywall. Once we get to the job, depending on the severity, we will either begin extracting water or if there is no water standing, we will begin getting readings to determine how wet the walls and floor is. After that, we begin taking off baseboards, taking up carpet pad and carpet if needed and cutting out a little bit of drywall to help get airflow inside the walls. Once that is complete, we set fans in different areas of the affected area and let them run for 2-3 days. SERVPRO of Boone & Clinton Counties monitor daily and remove fans when the area is dry. After that, we begin other work if needed such as demo and rebuild.

Sump Pump Failure

7/21/2021 (Permalink)

A sump pump is great to have and amazing when it works, but if it ever has a fault or stops working entirely, it could lead to some major problems. A sump pump is a pump that is used to remove water that has come into the home and are commonly found in basements. When a sump pump fails, there is no way for it to know when water is getting to high, which then leads to flooded basements and costly repairs. Once the sump pump fails and water stops flowing, it is a good idea to go check on the sump pump and try and determine the issue. The next thing you would want to do is contact SERVPRO of Boone & Clinton Counties to come out and extract the water that has settled in your basement. After getting the water out, SERVPRO will then try and pinpoint the issue, so they can give a solution on how to fix the sump pump. Sometimes it could just be a power surge that made it fail and all it takes is a reset of the breaker. Other times, it could actually be faulty and need replaced.

Tips for Heavy Rain in the Forecast

7/21/2021 (Permalink)

An abundance of rain in the forecast can be good for our gardens and grass but can lead to some issues if you have any cracks or holes leading into your home. It can also be bad on your sump pump to as it could get overworked and fault. Here are some tips that you could use to ensure no water will get in during a heavy rainfall. First thing would be to check the lowest points of your home for any cracks, holes or anything else that may let water in. The second thing that you should do would be to check your sump pump to ensure that it is working properly. To check the sump pump, fill a bucket with water and pour it into the basin (hole) where the sump pump is to make sure that it turns on when it should and drain the water. The last thing that you should do is check all doors and windows to make sure they are secure. If anything does happen during the rainfall, contact SERVPRO of Boone & Clinton Counties and we will be there to help you get the problem taken care of.

With warmer temperatures, snow and ice will begin to melt and could lead to future problems such as a flooded basement for example. Another thing about spring is the spring rains. The showers may lead to beautiful flowers, but it could also lead to some ugly repair costs if your home or business is not set up for large amounts of water.

During this time where the weather is getting warmer, things begin to thaw and rain comes into forecasts. If any issues come up, give SERVPRO of Boone and Clinton Counties a call. Our extraordinary staff is always available and will be sure to get your home or business back in order "Like it never even happened."

You can also interact with us on social media. We are on Twitter and Facebook and will be happy to answer any questions you may have about potential water damage the spring season may cause.

Best Practices for Freezing Weather

2/4/2021 (Permalink)

Winter time in Indiana can be very unpredictable. Temperatures can drop at any given time, which could lead to expensive repairs if preventative steps are not taken. Temperatures are expected to drop to extremely cold levels this weekend with frigid temperatures following into next week. Here are some best practices that you can use to make sure you avoid any problems:

  1. Make sure all faucets that are near an outside wall or exposed are dripping water. Having water continuously run through the pipes, even at a small level, will help prevent pipes from freezing.
  2. Keep the water shutoff accessible. Just in case a pipe were to freeze and burst, you want to be able to access it as quick as possible. In doing so, you will save yourself a lot of money. Another good idea would be to follow up with everyone in your household, so they know the procedure if something were to happen.
  3. Be sure to check your furnace and any other heater that you may have in either your house or garage to make sure it is running smoothly. Also, be sure to check doors for any type of crease that air could flow in from. If you can feel air coming through, be sure to get that covered immediately.

If, at any point during this time, you have any sort of issue come up pertaining to busted pipes, flood, water damage, or any other sort of inconvenience, be sure to reach out to SERVPRO of Boone and Clinton Counties to ensure you get the problem taken care of immediately. Our incredible staff is highly trained and available 24/7. Contact us at (765) 659-9600 if anything comes up during this frigid time. We are here to help keep you safe and warm.

COVID Cleaning for Commercial Properties

11/18/2020 (Permalink)

Many people are hesitant to go into commercial buildings due to being around people who may have been exposed to COVID-19. With this SERVPRO of Boone and Clinton Counties is part of Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned developed by SERVPRO Family Franchise. Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned is a method meant to rid of viral pathogens. This is a 3 C’s step by step program we provide for businesses: Consult, Clean, and Certify. When a commercial business has gone through our program they receive a decal sticker on their window to show their customers are in a disinfected area.

Consult

The first step of the C’s is to Consult. Consulting will determine the level of disinfecting needed for the building. Other forms of cleaning customization we consider is the size of the building, how many people are actively in the building, and the nature of the business. For example a warehouse cleaning program will look significantly different than that of a restaurant or shopping center.

Clean

The second step is Clean. The cleaning process will take measures such as: People, Process, and Product. Our technicians are prepared and equipped to not breathe the air in your facility along with spreading any pathogens. SERVPRO of Boone and Clinton Counties technicians have been trained to dispose of their PPE appropriately. Based on the level of contamination it may be required to perform various cleanings, this will ensure confirmed COVID-19 pathogens have been exterminated. All SERVPRO franchises are using CDC certified products to ensure elimination of viral pathogens.

Certify

The third and final step is to Certify. In order for your customers to feel safe in your building we will put a sticker decal that shows the cleaning and sanitization process that was taken at your business.

Create a safe environment and give your customers one less thing to think about. Give us a call at (765) 659-9600 to go through our 3 C’s Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned program.

How to Dry Commercial Premises Properly

11/18/2020 (Permalink)

We understand that temporary closure to your Boone and Clinton County businesses can be frustrating and expensive. Our team works with premises managers to ensure that drying property is as efficient as possible, allowing you to re-open faster. When materials become wet, evaporating moisture can form a layer of saturated, humid air above the surface. This layer can slow down drying times as water on, or surfaces have nowhere to go. SERVPRO technicians can combat this vapor barrier by ensuring air circulation remains consistent throughout your business premises. We achieve this primarily by placing air-movers in the property with precise entry and exit spaces.

How do I place the air - movers?

  • Use enough air-moves to create air circulation across surfaces
  • Balance air-moving equipment with dehumidification
  • Allow entry and exit points

How can I set up an efficient drying situation?

A property with commercial flood damage in Boone and Clinton Counties is likely to require a significant number of air-movers. However, the exact number depends upon the situation. If floodwaters have primarily affected floors, we can use less air-moving equipment. On the other hand, if there is visible wetness on walls or ceilings and fittings, carpets, and furniture, the number of air-movers must increase exponentially. SERVPRO technicians can create a circular airflow by placing air-movers at a 45-degree angle. Circular airflow can help to dry the upper areas of a property. Generally, we use one air-mover per 10 to 16 feet along walls.

How do I balance air-movers and dehumidifiers?

  • A low number of air-movers to dehumidifiers can slow drying
  • Too many air-movers can spread moist air causing secondary damage
  • A balanced drying system ensures dehumidifiers capture any moisture in the air

Re-opening a business after flooding is a time-sensitive issue. Contact SERVPRO of Boone and Clinton Counties at (765) 659-9600.

Flash Flood Precautions

7/30/2020 (Permalink)

Since we are experiencing lots of rain these days, we wanted to provide you with some helpful information on flash floods--especially because many of our customers live close to lakes and rivers. However, as fun as living near the water might be, it can put home/business owners at a high risk for water damage due to flash flooding.

According to weather.gov, flash flooding is the number 1 cause of weather related deaths in the United States, so it’s important to be aware of how they work, and what to do if you experience one.

There are two key factors that make up flash floods: 1.) Intensity of the rainfall, and 2.) The duration of the rainfall. Soil conditions, as well as ground cover also play a role in flash floods.

Flash floods can be unpredictable. Sometimes they happen within a few minutes of a storm, while other times they start after many hours of intense rainfall. However, most flash floods are caused by slow moving thunderstorms, or heavy rainfall from tropical storms and hurricanes.

Another important factor to note is that flash floods can be extremely strong. They can rip out trees, move large boulders, and destroy buildings, homes, and bridges. They can also cause dangerous mudslides, as well as reach heights of  30 feet or more! Please remember that even if flood waters appear shallow, they can still be dangerous. 6 inches of water might not seem hazardous, but if it's moving fast enough, it can knock you off your feet! Even as little as 2 feet of water can float a car! For your safety, and for the safety of those around you, never try to walk, swim, or drive through fast moving flood waters. Turn around, go a different way, and get to higher ground until it’s safe. If your home or business ever experiences water damage from flash flooding, don’t hesitate to reach out! We value your property and personal belongings, and want to give you peace of mind by restoring the damage. We are here when you need us most!

Being Prepared for the Storm

7/30/2020 (Permalink)

Tornado outbreaks, river floods, flash floods, historic earthquakes, and even water main breaks and power outages in U.S. cities are more examples that affect millions of people for days at a time.

Now is the time to think about the basics, things you will need in advance of an emergency: how you will communicate, what supplies you will need to keep in your home, car or office. Use the list provided here to build an emergency supply kit to ensure your family is equipped and ready for any type of disaster.

The more you know about what to do in an emergency, the more confident and secure you will feel in your abilities to manage through a disaster.

Preparation is the key to making it through any size disaster, whether it is a small water leak, a large fire, or an area flood. The best time to plan for such events is not when the event happens, but well before it happens. No one plans on a disaster, but now, you can plan for it.

Build An Emergency Supply Kit:

  • Water, gallon per person per day
  • Food, non-perishable 3-day supply
  • Manual can opener
  • Battery operated radio and extra batteries
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities, if necessary
  • Dust masks or bandannas
  • Plastic sheeting, garbage bags and duct tape
  • Local maps

Tips For Thunderstorms

7/30/2020 (Permalink)

Knowledge is invaluable when disaster strikes.  Having a plan in place can keep us safe.

Here our some tips from the American Red Cross concerning Thunderstorms:

Thunderstorms

Severe thunderstorms produce hail with a diameter of at least 1 inch or wind gusts of at least 58 mph. Lightning produced by thunderstorms kill more people each year than tornadoes or hurricanes. Widespread power outages caused by high winds which damage homes, blow down trees and utility poles. Flash flooding can be caused by heavy rains during thunderstorms.

What’s the Difference? Storm Watch vs. Storm Warning

A severe storm watch is when there is a possibility for severe thunderstorms in and near the watch area. It is advised to remain informed and ready to act in the event of a severe thunderstorm warning is issued.

A severe thunderstorm warning is when there has been reports of severe weather by spotters or radar. Warnings indicate an imminent danger to life and property.

People are seriously injured or killed by severe thunderstorms every year despite advance warning. While some may not be informed on such warnings, there are those who hear the warning but do not heed to it; therefore, it is vital to stay engaged and have a plan in place in the event of a severe thunderstorm and if evacuation is necessary. The information in this section, combined with timely watches and warnings about severe weather, may help save lives.

For more information about storms visit the National Weather Service.

If you need us in the event there is property damage, feel free to reach out at (765) 659-9600. We are available 24 hours a days, 7 days a week, 365 days out of the year, 366 on leap years. We're here to help get it back to "Like it never even happened."

Preventing Office Fires

7/29/2020 (Permalink)

Threats to your business can come in all sorts of forms, which is something that business owners know all too well. However, have you thought about the threats that a fire could pose? While often underestimated, fires can cause extreme amounts of damage and can even prevent reopening in some cases—but being prepared can go a long way toward ensuring this does not happen.

When you increase your workplace fire safety, you are protecting your business and the people who show up to work for you every day. By training everyone on fire safety practices such as evacuations and making sure your business stays up to code, you can prevent a lot of headaches later on.

Fire Safety Tips for Business Owners

Follow code guidelines and inspection schedules. Knowing the fire safety codes that apply to your business is the smartest first step toward fire safety. Efforts such as regular equipment inspections and fire exit maintenance can do wonders for the overall safety of your building.

Identify your specific risks. The risk of fire can vary greatly depending on the industry of your business and even based on geographic location, so being aware of these discrepancies and planning for them is key. Take extra precautions where necessary regarding equipment, chemicals and any other fire risks you may face.

Create (and practice) a fire evacuation plan. It is much easier to keep employees safe if they are prepared ahead of time on the fire evacuation protocol. Hosting regular drills will let everyone know exactly what to expect in the event of a real fire scenario, so they can make a safe and swift escape from the building.

Have regular fire safety seminars with staff. Also making time for fire safety discussions with staff will help alleviate any other fire risks that have been missed in the previous steps. Things like noting the location of fire extinguishers and going over safety with breakroom cooking equipment can go a long way in preventing a fire from happening at all.

Fire Damage In Boone and Clinton Counties

7/28/2020 (Permalink)

Most Boone and Clinton County home fire damage does not cause major structural damage, but there is always some physical damage from heat and flames. Most homeowners have to deal with the common, secondary issue created by the local fire department when they extinguish the fire.

The goal of SERVPRO is not just to remediate fire damage in Boone and Clinton Counties, but also to reduce and hopefully prevent any secondary damage while cleaning up from the original disaster. Our response teams perform both sets of tasks concurrently to ensure we can return each home in its pre-fire condition to every owner as quickly as possible.

Our teams begin by removing structural and personal property to reduce the odors in the home and prevent further contamination from smoke and soot residues. This action includes any scorched items or anything heavily covered in soot and smoke residues. They dispose of all burned items and remove the rest to our offices where specialists use commercial-grade cleaning agents and sound wave generating immersion tanks to remove the extra thick layers of residues.

For items covered in only light-to-medium layers of residues, our technicians remove them to an unaffected area of the home and clean them in place. They can usually accomplish this using dry or wet sponges, and one of the milder cleaning agents in our inventory.

As the cleaning continues, a SERVPRO inspector examines the entry points, walls, and even the roof for damage. For broken windows and doors, team members cover them temporarily with plywood. Depending on the level of damage to the roof or walls, our specialists cover them with plywood or use tarps. Team members accomplish this to not only protect against inclement weather, but to also protect the interior of the home from the rodents, animals, and other pests native to Indiana.

After cleaning the home, our team then deodorizes it. Odors can linger for weeks and months after all other damage has been removed or remediated. Technicians can usually eliminate odors with a combination of deodorizing sprays, but if the odors deeply penetrated the wood framing, they use an ozone machine to generate a gas that penetrates to the same level as the original odor and eliminates it.

Stopping and preventing further fire damage is not a short task, but SERVPRO of Boone and Clinton Counties is here with you at every step of the process. If you have any lingering odors or other problems after a recent fire, call us at (765) 659-9600 to begin returning your home to its pre-fire condition and your family back to its normal state as well.

Does Your Boone or Clinton County Home Have A Mold Problem?

7/13/2020 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Conditions In Boone and Clinton County Might Be Right For Mold

7/13/2020 (Permalink)

It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.

If the right conditions exist, mold will grow.  Those conditions include:

  • Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
  • Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
  • Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.

Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.

If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of Boone and Clinton County to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.
